Aligning characters vertically
I'm trying to align all characters on one baseline:

I think there might be a better way to do this

It's not clear to me whether you really want everything aligned on the baseline, as your text suggests, or whether you are trying to centre things, as you proposed alternative seems to indicate. If you want centring, you can obviously substitute the appropriate anchor.
This is adapted from egreg's modification of your code, as indicated below.

Note that this code produces a lot of bad boxes. Since egreg left them, so did I, but you should probably address them in your real document if you can, one way or another.
The problem is the C column type.
You should use the predefined w{c} column type instead that doesn't try to typeset paragraphs.
